Critical Care Medicine Fellowship

Welcome from Program Director

Neal Chaisson

Thank you for your interest in the Cleveland Clinic fellowship program in Critical Care Medicine. As a program director, I am extremely proud of our commitment to training tomorrow’s leaders in critical care. We are committed to finding and training the best physicians in the world, irrespective of where you were born, where you trained, or how you look. With one of the largest Medical Intensive Care Units (MICUs) in the U.S., we have created a unique environment for training fellows. Our team of educators is wholly committed to advancing the careers of our trainees through mentorship and effective teaching techniques.

About Us.

Training Physician Leaders: Our track record of developing physician leaders is centered on our commitment to excellence in patient care, education, scholarship and innovation. The COVID-19 pandemic is a classic example of how we put these priorities into action. We have had the privilege of leading the clinical, educational, and research response to COVID-19 for Cleveland Clinic. In our ICUs, creating a work environment that is safe for caregivers and patients alike has been our top priority. By ensuring the physical, spiritual and emotional wellness of caregivers our Critical Care fellows, nurses and staff are able to truly provide world class patient care. Here is one example.

Team of World Class Experts and Educators: Our team of content experts and educators are constantly improving curricula and teaching platforms with the abundant resources available at the Cleveland Clinic.  One example of this includes our SEVA ventilator curriculum.  This curriculum engages fellows in weekly interactive, case based exercises coupled with in-depth simulation experiences.  Curricula like SEVA have been viewed around the world and continue to demonstrate our national and international influence in teaching.

Structured mentoring process: A structured mentoring process is essential to ensuring the success of training during fellowship and to foster our commitment to developing leaders in pulmonary/critical care medicine. All fellows meet with the program directors at least twice-yearly to discuss their clinical, research, and career interests. To learn more, please click here to read Mentoring: Seven Roles and Some Specifics by Dr. Tobin

Productive Research Environment: we have been extremely productive with research related to COVID-19, sepsis, ARDS, ECMO, mechanical ventilation, point of care ultrasound, medical education & simulation, and informatics/big data.  Our commitment to every fellow is to provide a mentored approach to learning the fundamentals of research with ample opportunities to explore avenues of interest.

Innovation and creativity is a cornerstone of our program and has been highlighted throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. From novel therapies for ventilating multiple patients with a single machine to innovative techniques to improve simulation and teaching (here), the expertise, teamwork and resources of the Cleveland Clinic enterprise serve to make our ICU a model for critical care advancement.

The examples above are only a fraction of the exciting work our fellows and staff are pursuing. We would love the opportunity to meet you and to show you more about what makes Cleveland Clinic a world-class healthcare organization.

Our Approach to Scholarship.

Fellowship at Cleveland Clinic is designed to expose fellows to the scientific underpinnings of clinical practice and to familiarize them with research methodology and biostatistics. While all fellows are expected to engage in a research or quality improvement project, several options exist for fellows who wish to pursue research as a key part of their career.
